TCPP Porphyrin Abilities

Demonstration of the ability of TCPP porphyrin to distinguish between normal and tumor cells.

A sample containing tumor cells was mixed with a sample of normal cells from the lung (epithelial cells, intermediate squamous cells). A small amount of the mixture was placed on a microscope slide, fixed, and then stained with TCPP.

Photomicrograph A shows two cells, as viewed under "brightfield" microscopy, with a 40x magnification. Normal "white" light is used to illuminate the sample.

Photomicrograph B shows the same slide as is shown in Photomicrograph A, but viewed with a 40x magnification using the technique of fluorescent microscopy (similar to viewing with a "black light" and looking for cells to glow). The tumor cell is glowing red. The normal cell does not appear to glow at all.
