Lincoln,
NE (Feb. 2, 2010) - Biomoda, Inc. (OTCBB: BMOD) President
John Cousins will testify before the Government, Military and
Veterans Affairs Committee of the Nebraska Legislature on
Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, in support of legislation to provide
funding to screen Nebraska veterans for early-stage lung cancer.
"Veterans'
lung health is too often overlooked. Although the men and
women who serve in uniform are at least 25 percent more likely to
receive a diagnosis of lung cancer than the general population,
the disease is too often asymptomatic until it has advanced beyond
the lung," Cousins said. "Sen. Bob Krist and the
Nebraska Legislature understand that early screening will save
lives."
If
enacted, Legislative Bill 987 will appropriate $650,000 to the
Nebraska Department of Veterans' Affairs to contract with the
University of Nebraska Medical Center Eppley Institute for
Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases to conduct the screening
program based on a non-invasive diagnostic tool developed by
Biomoda and currently in clinical trials. Biomoda's CyPath®
diagnostic is for investigational use only pending approval by the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Biomoda
will join UNMC Eppley Cancer Center and the University of Nebraska
Medical Center at Wednesday's hearing to testify on behalf of the
veterans screening program.
The
committee hearing, scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. CST in Hearing
Room 1507 on Wednesday, Feb. 3, will be webcast live at http://www.netnebraska.org/
publicmedia/capitol.html
If
the Nebraska study is funded, volunteers will provide a deep-lung
sputum sample to be tested for cancer cells with the CyPath®
labeling solution, a porphyrin-based compound that preferentially
binds to cancer cells and causes them to fluoresce red under
ultraviolet light. Results will be compared to a computed
tomography (CT) scan, currently the standard of care for detection
of lung cancer, and sputum Pap stains read by independent
cytopathologists.
